Participation in Occupation Task One

Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues:
Provide an introduction to the focus of your first posting
Introduction to IT – has given us total knowledge and skills available to any given society. Through the use of computers we have made the world operate faster – with instant results, which has resulted in little patience with people, machinery – communication and social changes.

  • Provide a definition of Information Technology/Information
IT definition:Stands for "Information Technology," and is pronounced "I.T." It refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software, the Internet, or the people that work with these technologies. Many companies now have IT departments for managing the computers, networks, and other technical areas of their businesses. IT jobs include computer programming, network administration, computer engineering, Web development, technical support, and many other related occupations. Since we live in the "information age," information technology has become a part of our everyday lives. That means the term "IT," already highly overused, is here to stay (http://www.techterms.com/)

The use of computers receiving, storing and sharing electronic information through telecommunication processing (penguin, English Dictionary, Allen R. consultant editor, 2004).
Technology – the knack of so arranging the world that we don’t have to experience it (Frisher, M. 1957)
  • Interpret this definition in your own words.  What might this definition cover.  Interpretation definition of technology today has increased pace of delivery in communication, transport, home appliances, social changes.
A fast efficient method of communication, through electronic connection of personal computers, laptops, skype, emails, mobile phones. We can be connected into a world of communication, where by we dont have to be in the country or place to experience the same effect. eg we dont have to be in Australia to see country's geographic landscape.
Consider the definition of IT you have provided.  How is this form of technology prevalent in our society?  How common place has it become?

Technology is everywhere we look in one form or other. It has dislocated us from roles/routine that were common place.
Todays world technology is prevalent in society.
Senior citizens over 70years down to young children age of 8years have access and use of mobile phones & ipods for music and even younger age have use and access of personal computers. Majority of people have the use of mobile phone, pc, I phones. They make use of skype, face book, hotmails to send and receive communication. Technoworld is all around us. Traveling in cars, buses we have access to movies, portable dvd players that allow that allow us to watch the latest movies.

The problem with technology is..... dislocation people from role and routines that are common place.
What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?

I am comfortable in the use of mobile phones, limited use of computers. Am I competent or not is unanswerable to gauge in comparison to what? If I compare my grandchildren and their experienced usage of IT then yes I am.

Limits to my use of IT is usually time. Expansion of use in IT devices if I had the time and one on one guide or clear instructions of use and follow.

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences and referring to the tutorial readings answer the following questions (these questions are a useful starting point for your Technology Application Report)
The use of IT in Occupational Therapy practice is a fast efficient method of storing and receiving client records, gaining and sending information that is required. Communication with other professionals in the same area of Health.
Issues around occupational therapists adopting IT systems and tools, may be in breaching privacy, confidentiality and the use of tools may be too limiting or have restrictions within certain areas.

The use of IT and other communication devices can expand a clients world in various ways, through mobility, communication, use of tools and gadgets that will enable the client to interact with others. ie: Creation of employment, private business interaction.

Having IT understanding opens not only occupational therapists links to various forms of use of materials, and access to worldwide knowledge
In everyday lives. At the same time it can be an interference, when natural experienced knowledge could be useful.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing,  sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. internet)

Personal client information can/may be misused – photos, videos, conversations etc.Re computer ethics should be considered at all times.

who is this person?
Do I have her authorisation?
